Consumption of alcohol: Gaspesiens wisest, citizens of Quebec … a little less

In terms of alcohol consumption, the Gaspésiens and the Madelinots have gained wisdom in recent years, but the citizens of Quebec, they are much less wise than before.
Thee charts in 2019 Éduc’alcool reveals changes in the behavior of citizens in several regions of Quebec, whether excessive consumption of driving after consuming alcohol or combined consumption alcohol and cannabis.

Responsible consumption

Excess consumption is defined as consumption of five or more drinks on the same occasion in the last year.

Thus, it is now the region of Gaspésie-Îles-de-la-Madeleine who won the palm of consumption in moderation, she who ranked 10 th in 2017. Follow the Estrie in second and third place joint rank : Lanaudière, Laval and Montérégie.

And, conversely, the Quebec City region has suffered the biggest plunge in terms of moderate alcohol consumption. The area of the National Capital was first in 2015, fifth in 2017, and has fallen to 15 th place in 2019. The Saguenay-Lac Saint-Jean occupies the 16 th and last.

Éduc’alcool’s Executive Director, Hubert Sacy, notes that the Gaspésie-Îles-de-la-Madeleine is thus dismantling certain prejudices. “The Gaspésie-Îles-de-la-Madeleine, which, according to an urban legend, was a rather delinquent region, well it’s completely false. This is where there is the least amount of impaired driving; this is where there are the least social problems related to alcohol consumption, “he said.

Car driving

Responsible driving is defined by Éduc’alcool as those who do not drive with a blood alcohol level higher than the legal limit.

Here again, the Gaspésie-Îles-de-la-Madeleine is champion in 2019, just as it was in 2017. This is a big improvement over the year 2015, when it was in 13 th place out of 16.

Abitibi-Témiscamingue followed in second place, followed by Chaudière-Appalaches and Côte-Nord. It’s the Outaouais that is at the bottom of the pack.

According to Mr. Sacy, knowledge of the fact that police roadblocks have been erected in the region, or having seen them, is a major factor in the change in behavior when driving after drinking.

“In Gaspésie, it’s more difficult, because you have fewer opportunities to take siding. It could be an explanation, “he hypothesized.

Similarly, in some regions, such as in Beauce, spectacular accidents have been highly publicized. It may have influenced the behavior of people who had been drinking and would not consider driving anymore, Sacy said.

He also cited as an influencing factor the training given to waiters in bars, as part of the course “action service”. These servers, better trained, learn to tactfully discourage a driver too drunk.

Bars also have interesting practices, such as offering non-alcoholic drinks to designated drivers, he said.

Cannabis with alcohol

As for the combined use of alcohol and cannabis, Montreal is first, followed by the Outaouais, Saguenay-Lac Saint-Jean and Chaudière-Appalaches.

Éduc’alcool is currently campaigning against the combined consumption of these two substances, since the effect is then amplified. “We’ve been studying alcohol for 300 years,” so we know the effects better, but the same can not be said for cannabis use with alcohol, says Sacy.

The list is based on the statements of 6700 people interviewed by Crop on behalf of Éduc’alcool, both by telephone and on the Internet.
