Felipe Vazquez of the Pittsburgh Pirates arrested for soliciting a minor
Star lifter Felipe Vázquez of the Pittsburgh Pirates was arrested on Tuesday on charges of possession of pornography and solicitation of a minor. Major League Baseball placed him on administrative leave.
Vázquez was apprehended by the police of the State of Pennsylvania under one count of computer pornography / solicitation of a minor and one count of providing obscene material to minors. His appearance was scheduled for later on Tuesday.
The Florida Ministry of the Interior has announced that it has opened an investigation into Vázquez, 28, in August, after learning of an alleged sexual relationship between Vázquez and a teenager living in Lee, Florida. Vázquez, who lives in St. Cloud, Florida, and the victim began their relationship when the girl was 13, authorities said.
The girl, now aged 15, would have received in July a text message from Vázquez in which he engaged in a sexual act. Vázquez also sent a message to the girl asking if she wanted to meet him to have sex after the end of the baseball season, police said.
The authorities arrested Vázquez and took him to Allegheny County Prison after executing a search warrant on Tuesday morning at his Pittsburgh apartment. Police reported seizing electronic devices that will be used in the investigation. Vázquez will be extradited to Florida.
Vázquez, a Venezuelan selected twice for the all-star game, is 5-1, averaging 1.65 and 28 wins this season.
“We are taking this case, and these charges in particular, extremely seriously,” said Pirates President Frank Coonelly in a statement.
The Commissioner’s office placed Vázquez on administrative leave as part of his policy on domestic violence, sexual assault and child abuse.
Vázquez has signed a four-year, US $ 22 million deal with the Pirates before the 2018 season. The team holds options for 2022 and 2023.
