Former Quebec Nordiques captain Mario Marois joins the Baie-Comeau Drakkar for the remainder of the season and playoffs as a defenseman coach.
He will make his debut with the Côte-Nord team on Friday, during the Rimouski Oceanic Tour.
“The team’s head coach, Martin Bernard, was looking for an experienced man with leadership skills and a former NHL player,” said the press release about hiring Marois.
A native of L’Ancienne-Lorette, Marois played 955 games in the NHL with the New York Rangers, Quebec Nordiques, Vancouver Canucks, Winnipeg Jets and St. Louis Blues. He has a stake in the Stanley Cup final with the Rangers.
Since retiring in 1991-92, he has worked as a scout with Vancouver, Colorado, Carolina and the Detroit Red Wings, who had not renewed his contract for this season. He has also been an assistant coach with the Canucks club.
He was also one of the captains of the first generation of the Quebec Remparts in the mid-1970s. In his last year in the QMJHL, he had compiled 84 points and 234 penalty minutes.
