Carey Price did a great job and set the pace in Canadian history with victories, making 20 saves to help the Montreal side defeat the Detroit Red Wings 3-1 on Tuesday.
P rice now totals 315 victories in uniform blue-white-red, one more than Jacques Plante.
He had to keep the fort for more than a period and a half, while Jonathan Bernier was in great form at the other end of the ice. Price then made his best save with about 12 minutes left in the third period, making the big gap to stop Tyler Bertuzzi on the breakaway.
“It was a good night for him and it’s deserved,” said head coach Claude Julien about Price’s performance. He played a whole game tonight, gave us the opportunity to win. He saved the furniture, especially in the third period. ”
Max Domi and Brett Kulak finally hit the target in the second period for the Canadian (37-26-7), who had lost his last two games. Tomas Tatar had two assists and Domi added his second of the match by scoring in an empty net with 48.8 seconds left.
This victory allowed the Canadian to maintain the pace imposed by the Columbus Blue Jackets, who defeated the Boston Bruins 7-4.
The Canadian and the Blue Jackets have 81 points on the clock, but the Ohio team is eighth ahead of the Habs because of the number of victories it has won in regulation and overtime.
Andreas Athanasiou moved the strings early in the third period and Bernier finally made 33 saves in the net for the Red Wings (24-36-10), who have only one victory in their last 12 outings (1-8 3).
The Quebec goaltender resisted the Canadian’s assault for long periods, but the Red Wings finally lost their ninth straight game against the Habs. Their last win against the Montreal squad dates back to March 21, 2017.
“It was not a perfect match, I know we can play the best hockey tonight,” said Julien.
“We must give credit to the Red Wings, who skated well, played well. It was not the same team that two weeks ago (when the Canadiens won 8-1). ”
Bernier notably stopped Tatar in the early break and Kulak after a cross pass from Domi. He also frustrated Phillip Danault on a point-and-shoot start on a power play in the second period.
Domi finally opened the score with 7:33 to go on the second, deflecting a pass from Andrew Shaw in the top of the net. Kulak was then credited with the Canadiens second goal with 2:28 to go in the second period, using a good shot that surprised Bernier.
Athanasiou revived the debate by foiling Price after 40 seconds of play in the third, but Price was intractable thereafter. He heard the crowd chant his name after his few spectacular stops, including one at Bertuzzi’s expense.
Kulak had been reintegrated into the Canadiens squad, while Mike Reilly had been left out. Tatar was also back in the game after missing the last game because of a virus. Dale Weise was not in uniform.
The victory allowed Claude Julien Bryan Murray to reach the 15 th rank for more gains as head coach in NHL history with 620.
PRICE PROUD TO BE PART OF THE GREAT
Carey Price is not one to look far ahead of him and he said he did not follow his record-breaking Jacques Plante record for victories in Canadian history this season.
A few minutes after outpaced plant with 315 th victory by helping the Canadiens beat the Detroit Red Wings 3-1, Price told the press relations manager slipped him before a word beginning of the season, but it he had gone out of his mind afterwards.
“I am someone who sets goals, but they are never long-term goals. They are usually connected to the task in front of me, “said Price.
It was probably for this reason that he only wanted to keep his concentration after Max Domi had made the final blow by scoring in an empty net with just over 48 seconds to play.
Moreover, his calmness and concentration are often the two qualities mentioned when someone is called to talk about Price.
“It was not very fun to play against him,” said winger Tomas Tatar, who has faced Price for several seasons while wearing the Red Wings. He was still calm in front of his net. That’s what marked me.
“Having him as a teammate, I noticed how hard he works every day. And he is a very good teammate. ”
For his part, Price seems to like them a lot his teammates. After greeting the crowd with them, he left the rink of the Bell Center for a few moments before finally returning to the ice as he was selected first star of the meeting.
“I came into the locker room to celebrate with my teammates,” said Price about the delay before he came out to greet the spectators again. These guys worked extremely hard so we could win. It was also special to share this moment with the fans. ”
Price will still have many opportunities to celebrate victories with his teammates in the Canadiens locker room. Portraits of the team’s many legends are displayed above players’ lockers in the locker room. That of Jacques Plante is there too. Price admitted not knowing much about Plante. What he knows, he learned from his father, Jerry, himself a goalkeeper drafted by the Philadelphia Flyers in 1978.
“I think they all played really hard for this team,” said Price of the former players in the locker room. I think the majority of people who wore this jersey gave everything on the rink. I’m proud to be part of it. ”
Since the Canadian is at the heart of the series race, Price will not have much time to celebrate his feat. The Canadian was to resume training at 11 am Wednesday. Another important game is waiting for the team on Thursday, at Uniondale, while the Habs hope to carve a place for the playoffs.
If the Canadian achieves his goal, Price will certainly have had a say, as he has done many times in his 315 victories in the Sainte-Flanelle.
