Quebec announces more money for books in schools
Franois Legault confirmed Thursday, an additional investment of $ 5 million for the purchase of books in school libraries. In concrete terms, this will allow the purchase of about two more pounds per student each year.
ThePrime Minister traveled to the Boisé school in Charlesbourg to show his affection for books. He then spoke with about ten elementary students who attended the announcement.
This sum is added to the $ 15 million already planned, for a total investment of $ 20 million, which will be recurrent for at least the next four years, he said. This will bring the total funding for school libraries to $ 80 million.
Mr. Legault, who was accompanied for the occasion by the Minister of Education, Jean-François Roberge, and the Minister of Culture, Nathalie Roy, said he hoped to make libraries more attractive to young people and raise their interest in arts and culture.
Moreover, he encourages school authorities to favor the purchase of Quebec books. “I think it’s important, for Quebecers’ pride, to live our culture and to be able to see more of our artists,” he said.
“I want, when I go to the electorate in 2022, that Quebeckers say,” This government has invested in culture, “he added.
On Thursday, the Quebec Federation of Educational Professionals (FPPE) responded by calling the announcement “excellent news for libraries and students”.
However, in an e-mail exchange, President Jacques Landry pointed out that several school libraries are currently in a “sorry state”.
In his opinion, more librarians should be hired because they are best placed to advise school boards and schools on the purchase of books and digital resources.
At present, there are only 102 school librarians in 72 school boards in Quebec. In 18 school boards, there is no librarian.
“Quebec school libraries are sometimes in poor condition, the lack of space and the dilapidated buildings make libraries sometimes find themselves in the hallway, in cramped classrooms or outright abolished classrooms. This situation must be rectified, “said Landry.
Local information matters to me and I want to participate in the future of my life.
